Club Night

UC Juniors Club Night is held throughout the summer track & field season on Wednesday evenings, 5:15 - 6:45pm at Westburn Primary School, 257 Waimairi Road

Under 7 - Minis Run - Jump - Throw (athletics fundamentals) coordinated by Jo Gibbs
Boys & Girls aged 7-14 alternate between competition & coaching evenings in age groups
We encourage participation & PB's (Personal Bests)!

Club Night aims to encourage participation by 4 to 14 year old children of all ability in structured athletic activities in a supportive & friendly atmosphere. It provides a great introduction to track & field, which is perfect for children before beginning interclub competition & squad coaching. Athletes begin by learning basic track & field skills & also build strength & fitness, have fun, & make lots of new friends! The level of coaching & skills taught match the athlete's ability at each level, progressively increasing in difficulty, as does the competition! Above all, the club's focus is to foster a positive attitude to fitness, help achieve sporting potential & provide a fun & friendly environment for the whole family.
Children are grouped according to their age and gender from under 7 to 14 years of age. Each group has a team leader that provides them with coaching & encouragement throughout the season. Each group is limited to a maximum of 10 athletes.

The club has a 'Minis' group for all children under 7 years of age. This group use modified equipment & coaching techniques, based on the proven Run - Jump - Throw approach. Some events are modified to suit the children's development, however, they compete in most events
on competition nights.

Club Night alternates between coaching & competition each week. On competition night every athlete's times & distances are recorded. We are fortunate to have electronic timing & a meet manager programme to provide accurate results. A database of each athlete's PB's is saved
& displayed on our notice boards for them to be proud of & strive to improve. The emphasis at competition nights is on striving for P.B's.
Over the latter stages of the season our Club Champs are held on competition nights. This offers all children a chance to compete in 10 events with accumulated points deciding the champion in each age group. It is always very close & the age group champions often not known until the club prizegiving. There are often surprises & the competition brings out the best in many children who achieve impressive P.B's.

Parent Help Roster
It is expected that parents will help with Club Nights during the season as its success is dependent on the voluntary contributions provided by all parents/family members. Competition nights require the support of approximately 30 parents to enable all children to participate. Each family is required to help on approximately four nights per season. One parent per family will be rostered on to assist. You can choose to either help with general or specific tasks such as measurement & timing, & we will endeavour to roster you to activities in which your children will be participating.
This is a huge task to coordinate so while every attempt is made to accommodate individual availability, we ask that you please make this a priority when you are needed.
Parents may also be asked to help at field events on coaching nights.
