UC Track & Field
Summer Season - October to April
|
At UC Track & Field our goal is to provide a structured pathway for former children's members as they move into senior competition (15 years +), & offer quality training opportunities to all senior athletes including Secondary School & University of Canterbury students. Our programme draws on the strengths of our very successful UC Juniors section to give athletes the option to train in a squad environment with our experienced & qualified coaches.
Our club registration fees include the compulsory Athletics NZ levy for athletes who wish to compete in weekly interclub or national competitions. There is also a small club membership fee which allows all athletes access to exclusively booked facilities & our equipment. UC Athletic Club student members are able to utilise the Ilam Fields track (when the grounds are not booked by other UC clubs). Athletes who intend to compete also need to purchase a club singlet or crop-top.

Report from Malcolm Cornelius Just a short time after the 6.3 quake rocked Christchurch, a few committed members of the University of Canterbury Athletic Club travelled up to Hastings for the 2011 NZ Masters Champs. With everything that happened on the 22nd Feb and the days following fresh in their minds, Julieana Findlay, Michael Bond and Malcolm Cornelius kept up the proud tradition of UC and Canterbury athletes performing well at National level. The stress and sadness was temporarily replaced with steely determination to do their best for Canterbury and those athletes that were unable to come due to the disaster. For Julieana this was even harder because of the tragic loss of her coach, Brian Taylor. When she arrived, she also had to deal with a stomach bug, but with real heart and the fantastic support of her partner, still managed to remain competitive. She ran a tough 4:57 1500m on the Sat feeling ill, and then a very good 2:23 800m on the Sun after recovering a little over-night. Julieana had put in a tremendous amount of work over the last 6 months getting back to her best, and she definitely would have gone faster without the illness and quake stress. Results: W40 800m Gold 2:23.22, W40 1500m Gold 4:57.93 Michael Bond once again proved age is no barrier to performance with outstanding times in his three events that guys years younger would be happy with. As Michael has only been running track for the last couple of seasons, he is still adjusting to racing but looks to be feeling more comfortable with each race. Results: M65 1500m Silver 5:54.43, M65 5000m Silver 21:26.84, M65 2000m Steeplechase Silver 9:17.04 Malcolm Cornelius gave it all he had in the 1500m on the Sat to slice 3 secs off his previous best. With a little bit of luck he could have achieved his goal of doing a 2:10 800m the next day. Unfortunately, he didn’t go out fast enough at the start and got held up behind a couple of the other runners, and this let the leaders and a fast time slip away. He finished the season with a 2:11.24 800m a week later at the Timaru T&F meet. Results: M40 400m Bronze 59.93, M40 800m Silver 2:14.71, M40 1500m Silver 4:27.10 (PB) A great effort to bring home a total of 2 Golds, 5 Silvers and a Bronze. |
